What this book offers is an exiciting look at a performance of philosophy itself.
Being an atheist myself, I expected this book to be reasonably unbiased, but it struck me early on as a pamphlet on philosophical theocentrism, although camouflaged as it turns out to be in this particular case.
According to Jaspers, we cannot make God an object of our knowledge. Kant then became the philosopher for me and has remained so This has become known as the biographical method and now forms a mainstay of psychiatric and above all psychotherapeutic practice.
Even if we try to become the objects of our own thinking, then we are still subjects who may determine the objectness of all objects.
According to Jaspers, we become ourselves by choosing between being and nothingness. The discussion on topics that are not involved better yet, entangled and choked with his idea of god or, as he likes to appoint it, the "Comprehensive" are actually reasonable and worth reading.
